A Local Treasure Hidden in Plain Sight
For five years, Portland Furniture on Burnside thrived mostly by word-of-mouth, as customers told their friends and family about the store’s variety and affordable prices.
Still, many people were missing out on the store’s charms. Tucked discreetly next
to The Bitter End pub,Portland Furniture was virtually camouflaged from passersby.
When Dana Griffith purchased Portland Furniture two years ago, she set to work getting the landlord’s permission to paint the storefront a warm, mocha color,
accented with green trim. Now the façade beckons to pedestrians and drivers alike.
Inside, Portland Furniture offers surprising variety considering the size of the store.
In addition to checking out floor samples of bedroom furniture, barstools, custom-
designed mirrors and more, visitors can special-order from a plethora of in-store cat-
alogs.
Although accessories have sold well since Griffith added them to the store’s
selection, Portland Furniture is still best known for its custom-made, upholstered
furniture. These sofas, sectionals and chairs are available in 200 styles, including
contemporary, transitional and traditional.
Transitional furniture is especially popular in northwest Portland,it merges the gap
between the traditional historic homes and a newer, more contemporary feel. The
style also works well in newer spaces, adding an inviting touch to the clean lines of condos and lofts.
Residents of these smaller spaces are usually excited to learn that Portland Furniture offers “condo-sized” sofas, which fall between the sizes of a standard sofa and a loveseat.
These sofas are highly customizable. Want one seat cushion instead of three?
Like this sofa, but prefer that leg style? Prefer a firmer cushion filling for more back support? Portland Furniture can make it happen.
“If someone walks in who’s 6’4”, we can custom-size a sofa to the right depth
for them,” says Griffith, who also provides free in-home consultations with purchase.
These customizations come with a refreshingly low price tag; sofas at Portland Furniture average $900 to $1000. Changing a style—adding 10 inches in depth, for example—costs only $200. Turn-around is prompt: custom orders arrive within three to five weeks.
So if you’ve been considering adding more seating to your home to accommodate holiday guests, now is the time to visit Portland Furniture. |
